Florida State got its 5th commitment of 2011 when Ridge Community standout athlete Karlos Williams…
News and Notes: FSU Commitments Enjoy JR Day
The list did grow by one when Karlos Williams wrapped up his recruitment much earlier than expected when he committed to Coach Fisher the Seminoles.
Each of the commitments had a great time over the weekend and each spent time trying to recruit others to join the 2011 class the ‘Noles have going.
Williams Wraps Up Recruitment Early and Commits
Many who follow FSU figured that 4-star safety Karlos Williams was slated to become a Seminole when the recruiting process was all said and done. While Williams did mention that FSU was his leader he was open throughout as he wanted to check out other programs.
It was a little bit of a surprise to some that Karlos went ahead and decided to commit Saturday morning to Coach Fisher and his staff. Karlos says that he is excited that the process is over and now he can turn his attention to making this class as good as it can possibly be.
"I feel real good about my commitment," said Williams. "I get a chance to play with my brother for his last 2 years in college. It's going to be a great experience. Me and Jimbo talked today and I liked what he was saying and also my parents did. When I pulled the trigger I asked Coach Fisher what number he wanted me to wear. He just looked at me kind of crazy and said, what do you mean? I said I want to be a ‘Nole. And, I can wear #22 because my brother is #11 and I want to be twice as good as him. Or, I could be #9 and we could be 9-1-1. I really feel real good about it."
"We got a great class coming in with the 2 DB's (Brutus/Smith) coming in from the same school Jeff Luc came from; those guys are awesome and great guys," continued the newest commitment. "Also, Trey Pettis, me, Eric Beverly. I talked to Eric today about trying to get HaSean Clinton Dix in there. He went up to Alabama with Dee Hart today (Saturday). He's going to come back down; we're going to try to get him in here. We'll get some good guys and help try to get Florida State back to where they're supposed to be."
Smith Feels at Home at FSU
Keelin Smith committed early to FSU and since he hasn't wavered in his decision. The talented Treasure Coast standout made his 8th visit to FSU this past weekend. He came away impressed yet again as he feels at home at FSU.
"It was cool," Smith said of the visit. "We came here last year with Jeff Luc as sophomores. We've been up here maybe 6 or 7 times. Yeah, we've been down here a lot so I feel like I'm at home. Me and Lamarcus, since we've already been through this you know, the players were doing some 7 on 7 and we went out there and watched and got more acquainted with some of the players and DB's and everything."
Smith got more of an opportunity at the Junior Day event to spend time with new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops. He said that he came away with some clearance on where he'll most likely be playing when he comes to FSU in the fall of 2011.
"Oh yes sir, I love Mark Stoops," said an excited Smith. "He and Coach Coley are like the MAIN reason I'm coming here. They remind me so much of my coach. You know, they're cool. Like some of these other coaches, you know, they're such about business. It doesn't seem like they play to have fun. I can't really explain it but, Mark Stoops and Coach Coley they'll be so straight with me, you know, they don't give me none of the trash talking or negativity. Most everybody's been talking about me playing either corner or safety, you know, different schools keep telling me I'm going to play corner. They say they don't care and that I can play anything I want. Coach Stoops and them are honest with me and tell me I WILL be playing safety."
Smith says he doesn't have any issues playing there as he is just happy to be called a Seminole.
"Actually, no, I don't care if I play corner or safety," said Smith. "I just want to be part of the Seminole Nation!"
Brutus Says the Visits paid off for FSU
Lamarcus Brutus committed the same day as Smith did this past December. Since then he has stayed pretty quiet and kept to himself as he's been working hard to prepare for his final season at Treasure Coast.
Like Keelin Brutus has been to FSU a ton of times, and each time the visits seem to get better and better for the talented defensive back.
"I've been here 6 or 7 times so it's still the same," said Brutus. "It's always good to come back and visit though. I still love it here. It still feels like home. I love the environment. I just like everything about it."
At one time it didn't look like Lamarcus was going to come to FSU as he was once leaning towards going to college out of state.
"Actually, I was debating on whether I was going to come here or go out of state," Brutus said, "but I decided that all of the schools out of state that I was considering were too far. Out of all the offers I had closer, I decided to come here because I liked it the most."
Beverly Comes Away Happy to Meet Coach Gran
Running back Eric Beverly is one of those kids that are all about FSU. He's been to numerous games over the past several years and he is a guy who will talk to as many recruits as possible in order to make this class as good as it can be.
Coming into the weekend one of his primary goals was to meet and sit and talk with new running back coach Eddie Gran. He says he was able to do that, and he left FSU happy about being able to do so.
"I got to meet Coach Gran for the 1st time, so I was happy to see him," said Beverly. "He was telling me all of the expectations he has and what he sees in me so I was just happy to meet him. Coach Jimbo, great guy. Straight Up. I'm loving it here. I'm just ready to get on campus and work."
There is little to worry about when it comes to Eric's recruitment.
"I'm locked in solid," Beverly said, "It's Florida State all day."
Pettis All FSU
Trey Pettis was the 1st commitment of 2011 and he is a guy who grew up loving everything about FSU. When he got his offer it wasn't too long after that he knew he was going to accept it and live out a dream.
Since his commitment he has attended a Junior Day event at Florida, leaving several FSU fans wondering what was going on. He says that while the visit to UF was good, he is nothing but a Seminole.
With that he came into this weekend looking for a good time and a fun visit. He was able to get all of that as he spent the day touring the campus, sitting in on meetings, and spending time with Coach Trickett.
"Today went real good," said Pettis. "We went through position meetings. We met with our position coaches. We toured the campus. We looked at everything. We looked at highlight film. We talked to Coach Fisher. We talked to some of the players and just had a really good time."
As always Pettis enjoys talking to Coach Trickett.
"I like Coach Trickett a lot," explained Pettis. "I mean, he's the main reason I'm coming here. He's the best in the business."
Trey enjoyed the day overall but he did have one thing that stood out to him.
"Getting to talk to Coach Fisher and getting to talk to some of the players is what stood out to me the most."
