NoleDigest.com's Take: Calvin Smith

Calvin Smith is one of Florida State’s top remaining targets for the 2010 class. NoleDigest looks at his recruitment and talks about the chances the Seminoles have at landing the defensive tackle.
Hialeah defensive tackle
Calvin Smith
was all set to go to
Tennessee
until Lane Kiffin headed back west to
USC
. Now that his recruitment is wide open again he is coming down to the final days of the process as he makes his decision.
Throughout his recruitment
Florida State
has been recruiting Calvin. They stayed in touch with him while he was committed to Tennessee, and that fact has helped their cause as he now searches for another school.
Coach Gran’s move from Tennessee has helped the Seminoles’ cause as he helped recruit the defensive tackle for the SEC program. The two have a great relationship that has only gotten better since Gran came over to the ‘Noles.
Smith has told NoleDigest recently that FSU is one of his top schools and that he really likes the coaches and the playing time available. Smith stopped short of naming a favorite because he is still considering Tennessee,
New Mexico
and
Alabama
.
For Florida State there was some rumored hesitation from the Smith camp is regards to whether FSU had a shot, but all reports indicate that those concerns have been taken care of.
Another factor going into this is that Smith has remained steadfast in saying the possibility of him and teammate
Corey Lemonier
playing at the same school remains high. The only school the two share in common? FSU.
Smith’s decision is going to come down to the relationship he has with the coaches and the chance to come in and compete for immediate playing time. The fact that Coach Gran and Smith have an outstanding relationship, combined with the extreme need for defensive linemen, is the reason may feel good about FSU’s chances here.
We’ll see in a few short days what happens with Calvin as he’ll be announcing on ESPN at 12:30 on February 3rd.
