NoleDigest Take: Matt Elam

5-star safety Matt Elam was in town this past weekend for his official visit. NoleDigest gives their take on the visit and discusses if it was enough for the Seminoles to give Elam something to think about with his recruitment.

Florida State has been working hard behind the scenes recruiting 5-star standout Matt Elam from Palm Beach Dwyer. Elam has long been committed to Florida, but over the past few months he has started to look at other options like Tennessee, Ohio State and Georgia.

About a month ago Elam publically stated that he was cancelling all visits and remaining a Gator. As we know now that wasn't the case as this past weekend he was in Tallahassee for the game against N.C. State.

After the game Elam briefly spoke to NoleDigest about how the visit was going. As we reported Saturday he said he was impressed by the offense, while on defense he saw that the team needed some help in the secondary. He said then that the visit was going well and that the conversations with the coaches were what he expected.

Since then Elam has laid low and chosen to not talk to any team sites at this time.

NoleDigest's Take:

The coaches at FSU, primarily Jimbo Fisher and James Coley, have done an excellent job recruiting Matt as they were able to get into the fight with him. 3 months ago FSU wasn't even in the picture.

FSU has a wide open depth chart at safety as they offer immediate playing time to just about all of the defensive backs they're recruiting. Elam's ability as a player would be a welcome addition to any team, but with FSU he is a recruit that is needed in the worst way.

While the chance to play early is important to Matt and FSU has an appealing situation, one has to admit that FSU is chasing other teams here. Florida is still solid as the leader, and Tennessee has come on strong. With visits to Ohio State and Georgia upcoming they'll have an opportunity to pitch Elam their program.

FSU should be commended for getting Matt on campus and fighting to land him, but at this time it is hard to imagine that Matt leaves the SEC.
