Godfrey Talks Recruitment and Favorites

Florida State is looking to sign a quarterback for the 2010 class. The name that has been constantly mentioned since February is Jeffrey Godfrey from Miami-Central High. NoleDigest caught up with Jeffrey to see what the latest is with his recruitment and to see if any schools are sticking out to him at this time.

According to Scout.com Jeffrey Godfrey is Florida's top rated passer for the 2010 recruiting class. As a coach's son Godfrey is a good decision maker who has the arm to make all of the throws. In an area littered with talent Godfrey has been a standout for several years. As a junior the Miami-Central standout led his team to the second round of the 6A playoffs as he threw for 2,126 and 26 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. His performance was good enough to garner second team All-State honors. Several programs have taken notice as Godfrey has a host of offers from top BCS programs across the country.

"Recruiting is still going pretty well for me," said the 3-star signal caller. "Nothing is really new with the offers but I have been in contact with a lot of coaches lately. I spoke to Coach Fisher from Florida State Wednesday, and I spoke to coaches from USF, West Virginia and Michigan this week."

With offers from FSU, Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee, Ohio State, USF, Michigan, West Virginia and a host of other schools Godfrey has a good list of schools to choose from. The mitigating factor for Jeffrey will be the opportunity given to him to play quarterback. Due to that factor Godfrey says two in-state schools have caught his attention so far.

"The coaches from all of these schools have been saying the same things pretty much," Godfrey said, "but the difference is that FSU and USF want me primarily as a quarterback. West Virginia and Michigan have mentioned quarterback but they list me as an athlete on their boards. Pretty much it is going to come down to who wants me as a quarterback and who pushes the hardest for me. Right now I'd say it is FSU and USF that are recruiting me the hardest."

Coach Fisher from FSU has made a big impact on Godfrey and he says the two have gotten along well throughout his recruitment.

"Coach Fisher is a great coach," said Godfrey. "He was telling me when we talked last that he was really impressed with the film from my spring game and that I can be the guy that could come in and get the job done for them. While we talk about football the thing I really like about Coach is that we talk about family and other things. He'll call me just to check in with how my family is, and I will call him to check in to see how he is doing."

The biggest knock on Godfrey is that he doesn't have the prototypical size that coaches look for. Godfrey is a shade under 6 feet tall, hence the reason why people list him as an athlete. Godfrey told NoleDigest that all of the talk about his size gives him motivation to prove the naysayer wrong.

"The whole issue with my size motivates me because I feel size doesn't matter if you can play the game," said Godfrey. "Doug Flutier wasn't big. A lot of people questioned Drew Brees. I'm working every day to improve my footwork and my game to show that I am a competitor and I can play."

It's been stated time and time again that Godfrrey, Brandon Gainer and Joshua Reese want to play together in college. Jeffrey says that it is 100% that they play together on the next level.

"We are a package deal with Derek Knowles," said Godfrey. "We are all being recruited by the same schools and we have always talked about playing together. We are like brothers and we know each other very well. We feel that if we go to the same college we can help each other get the job done."

The school that provides the combination of his major (accounting/business management), academics, environment, coaching and the chance to play quarterback is the school Godfrey will choose. He plans on being an early enrollee so look for a decision from the talented quarterback sometime in the late fall.
