Arnold suprises some'

In July Florida State landed one of the top safeties in the state when 3-star standout Travis Arnold committed to FSU. The Madison star had a great senior season as his team won the state championship after dominating the playoffs. NoleDigest caught up with Arnold to see what he's been up to and to see what his plans are before he graduates in June.

For Arnold, he was able to achieve the dream of going out in style as his team won the 3A state championship. It was a goal he had coming into the year, saying, "Things are going alright right now. It's pretty smooth. I'll tell you this season felt really good. This was my last year of high school ball and I wanted to go out with a bang. I think I played well and I think our team played like champions."

When Arnold committed to Florida State he capped off a month where the Noles landed 4 commitments. At the time he was the third safety committed to the 2008 class (C.J. Holton has since de-committed), adding quality depth to a position of major need. For Arnold FSU seemed like the right choice, saying, "The main reason I committed to FSU was that it is close to home. They are recruiting me as a free safety. I feel I could go there and play running back too, but they have a lot of guys there already. Where I come from FSU is what it's about. I think I'd fit right in. I like how the defense plays, as they are really good."

Even though he has been committed to FSU since the early summer, some schools have been on him still. Is that making Travis think about his commitment to FSU? The answer may surprise some. He said, "Some schools like Clemson have been coming after me. I've got to be honest in saying that I have been looking around a bit. FSU tells me that if I work hard I could come in and play right away. That's what I want to do, but I've been looking at some of the smaller schools like USF because I think I won't get a chance to play at FSU." When asked why he thinks he won't get playing time at a position with little depth, Arnold continued, "I don't think I'll get the chance to play at FSU. Also, I think I may get in too much trouble going there with my friends. As of right now I am still committed to FSU, but I am looking around."

This may come as a major shock to many after coming off the de-commitment of Holton. FSU needs to add 3 players at free safety, thus losing a quality kid like Arnold would be a blow to this class. One aspect that has been attached to him is his academic situation. Arnold says it is going well and that he feels he should be okay come the summer. "School is going pretty good. I think I'll finish out pretty strong. I have some making up to do so I am trying to get this overall thing okay. I've taken the ACT, but I only passed the math part. I am retaking that soon. I don't really remember my SAT score. Come graduation I think that I'll be good to go," stated Arnold.

It looks as though Arnold may be cooling on the Noles a bit, and that feeling is compounded when he states that, at this time, he doesn't plan on making an official visit to FSU. He said, "I've taken an unofficial there already, and I think it's very nice there. I don't think I'll be taking an official though. Every time my coach goes there I usually go with him, so I feel I've seen enough to know about them that way."

Arnold, who at this time is 5'10" and 185 pounds, says that besides getting his academics in order he is trying to get back to 195 pounds before getting to college. "My target weight is 195 pounds. I was there before I hurt my rotator cuff. It should be okay though by the time my freshman season rolls around. I think I need to get there to contribute as soon as I get on campus," stated Arnold.

As of right now it looks as though Arnold may not be in this class, He did stress that he is still committed, but he is looking around at schools where he feels he has more guaranteed playing time. Stay tuned to NoleDigest for further updates with Travis and the rest of the 2008 recruiting class.
