Orlando, FL – Florida State junior linebacker Geno Hayes is one of 66 preliminary candidates on the watch list for the Butkus Award. The list was announced Tuesday by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orland and is presented to the nation's best collegiate linebacker.
The Butkus Award ® Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 18. That semi-finalist list will be cut down to three finalists and will be announced on Thursday, November 9. The winner will be announced in December in Orlando, FL.
Hayes is an All-ACC second team selection by The Sporting News, a preseason All-ACC third team selection by Athlon Magazine and he was rated the nation's 21st ranked linebacker heading into the 2007 season by Rivals.com. The junior has started 10 games (all during the 2006 season) and played in 23 games during the first two years of his career. In 2006 he earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors for his performance in the Seminoles' season-opening win over Miami. Hayes is one of the most explosive and hardest-hitting linebackers in college football who will become a defensive leader with the graduation of linebackers Buster Davis and Lawrence Timmons to the NFL.
