Q&A With Melvin Ray

Q&A With Melvin Ray

Melvin Ray was able to stop by the Florida State summer camp recently and has just one more visit before announcing his decision.

Why did you decide to stop by the Bobby Bowden camp on Tuesday?

MR: I have been in Atlanta for a baseball tournament, so I haven't been on a football field in a few weeks. It is home and I wanted to get some work in. Plus, I really did not have anything to do. Also, I wanted to get ready for Friday Night Lights.

How do you feel you performed?

MR: I think I did real well. I think I was one of the top, if not the top, receivers out there. I needed to get back into it, so I feel I did better than I thought I would. I caught the ball well. The camp really helped me out. I went up against a lot of different guys, some I have met before at other camps. It was fun. I got to meet some of the guys who have been trying to recruit me in person. Overall I had a good time.

What coaches did you work with?

MR: I worked with (Lawrence) Dawsey primarily, but I also worked some with Coach (Jimbo) Fisher. Coach (John) Lilly also came out to watch me for a little bit. He is the coach that has been recruiting me.

You have said recently that your final two schools are Florida and Florida State. What stands out about each of these programs?

MR: Well, for Florida State, more than anything, I was raised in the Tallahassee area. I have been to many games and been to the school a lot of times. Everyone around there is a Nole fan, and they have treated me like family when I have been there.

As for Florida, they have been at the top of my list for a while. They show you the love there. Recruiting is easy for them, as a lot of kids want to go there. I have a level of comfort with Coach Gonzalez and Urban Meyer. They are young coaches who are going to be there for a while.

What are your plans for the rest of the summer?

MR: Well, I am focused on getting down to Florida for Friday Night Lights. That's what I am working on right now. I may stop by Tallahassee the day after, depending on when I get back into town.

Do you have an idea when you plan on deciding?

MR: I always thought that I was going to take my time and decide late in the process, but I will make a decision after Friday Night Lights. I went to the camp today and I am going to Florida next weekend. I should know for sure after that where I want to go. Look for a decision from me in early August.
