The 100 Greatest College Football Finishes since 1970 ... No. 6 to No. 10
Deion Walker set to visit FSU soon
"I'll narrow it down by August," said Walker, ranked No. 8 in the East by Scout.com, said. "I should have a solid top 12 by then. Once I do that I'll slowly start to narrow it down more. Hopefully, I'll be able to commit somewhere by October. I should be able to fit in about three official visits early."
Although he denies a favorite, Walker has already visited Penn State, Tennessee, North Carolina State and Maryland. "The environment at Penn State is great," he said. "It's a real up-beat place and I love that it's a college town. They have great facilities and I like the offense a lot. They actually air it out like 30-40 times per game and I didn't realize that."
Walker's friend is running back Daryl Vereen, who just signed with Tennessee last February. "When I went to Tennessee, Daryl showed me around and I had a lot of fun," Walker said. "I went to the spring game and that was intense. The fans go crazy there.
"Daryl told me that I've got to do what's right for me," he said. "He said he'd love it if I went to Tennessee, but that I've got to find a place that makes me happy both on the field and off it. He says the environment is really important and that's why I'm trying to see as many schools as I can in person."
Next week Walker is hitting up schools in the south before he heads north. "I'm going to visit Florida next week for sure, then I head to Florida State, LSU and South Carolina.
"After South Carolina, I head north to Rutgers, Boston College and Connecticut. From there I'm catching a flight to Michigan. I plan to visit Wisconsin, and possibly Notre Dame, when I'm out there."
Walker's final destination is going to be the West Coast, specifically California where he used to live. "I have a lot of family in California, so I'm going to stay with them," he said. "I'll visit USC when I'm out there toward the end of July. I'll try to get up to see California as well."
USC is a school Walker said he has followed for quite some time. "My dad is a huge USC fan and we've been looking at them forever," he said. "It's amazing they offered because they have such great tradition of winning. They always recruit the best players, especially at quarterback and the offense is amazing."
Indeed, the Trojans seem like a lock to make Walker's short-list. But that's all speculation. Who will really be among his final favorites remains to be seen.
"I'm looking for an environment where I can see myself for four years," Walker said. "Also, I want to fit into the offense and go where they pass the ball a lot."
He reports a 3.2 core GPA and a 21 ACT.
