FSU in Belle Glade wide receiver's top five

Posted Jun 11, 2007

Travis Benjamin is one of the top wide receiver prospects in South Florida this year and he talked about the latest.

Glades Central produced two Division 1 receivers last year (Deonte Thompson to Florida and Tarus McKinley to West Virginia). Many people felt that their best receiver last year was junior Travis Benjamin.

Benjamin, 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds, has a slight build but has tremendous speed and explosiveness. During last year's regular season, Benjamin led the team in receiving with 19 catches for 390 yards and seven touchdowns.

Now that Benjamin's a senior, college coaches from all over are keeping a close eye on him.

"Everything's good right now," Benjamin said. "We're out of town at a 7-on-7 tournament right now. We played Miami Northwestern in the spring game and even though we lost, I had four catches for 120 yards and a touchdown."

The standout receiver has already landed four scholarship offers and talked about the latest on the recruiting front.

"I have four offers from LSU, Miami, Ole Miss, and Ohio State," he said. "A lot of other people came down in the spring. (My top five) is LSU, Miami, Florida State, Florida, and Ohio State."

Benjamin spoke more about each of the schools on that list.

"I went up there not long ago," he said of LSU. "It's a good place and they run a good offense. UM's pretty good. If they get a good quarterback to run the offense, they'll be successful like they're used to. I like Coach Mosely. He seems like he could really help me and he'll work you hard. I'm trying to get up to Florida State and Florida later this summer."

Benjamin said he'll start narrowing things down when he begins taking his visits during the season.

"Academics, a good team, and a good program," he said are the three things he'll be looking for in a program. "I just scored a 17 on the ACT and now I'm just working on keeping my grades up."
