Owens making plays but admits to being rusty
But after missing all of last season recovering from a knee injury he sustained in 2005, the redshirt sophomore wide receiver is showing flashes of the type of player that he can be for FSU.
He has been a quiet but steady performer all spring. Monday, he posted two touchdown receptions in 11-on-11 drills to conclude the day.
"I just had two big plays but I did have a mistake," Owens told reporters. "The coaches are making us realize that we have to be close to perfect."
Playing close to perfect means embracing new wide receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey's tough-man mentality.
This spring a new emphasis has been placed on blocking by wide receivers. Owens admits that he must continue to work on that facet of his game.
"I'm not too pleased with my blocking," Owens said. "I feel like I have to be more aggressive and really focus. Just concentrate a little more. I feel like I haven't been concentrating as much."
Despite the fact that he modestly speaks of his game at this point in time, the Jacksonville native has still been impressive after missing an extended period.
With all the shakeups across the depth chart, he has a few days left of spring practice to fight for a starting spot. At Monday's practice he lined up with the first team. He has also been working with the punt return unit.
"To be honest with you, I think I am still shaking the rust off," Owens said. "I feel like I still want to get stronger and I still want to get faster so I feel like I am still in that process right now. I'm still working on it."
