Aaron Gresham: A 'hard-nosed kid'
After all, a week ago nobody knew that FSU was even in the mix for Lafayette High School standout Aaron Gresham.
The 6-foot-1 and 215-pound middle linebacker was looking at Louisville (he took an official visit there in December) and was scheduled to make the trip from Mayo to Tampa this past weekend to visit USF. He was also considering Michigan State.
Instead, a commitment to the Seminoles replaced that would-be trip to see the Bulls and it came as a bit of a suprise to Seminole Nation.
But what's even more surprising was that Gresham had committed to the Tribe before the weekend.
"(FSU defensive coordinator) Mickey Andrews came to visit him at home last week," Mayo head football coach Joey Pearson told Renegade Report. "He committed to Coach Andrews right after he offered him the scholarship."
Despite the fact that he is rated just a two-star prospect and is considered to be the No. 49-rated Mike linebacker in the country, Andrews and the rest of the defensive coaching staff at FSU know the type of player they recruited.
But for those that are still skeptical, Coach Pearson can sum up exactly what type of athlete will be donning the garnet and gold next season.
"Aaron's a very physical player that moves quickly to the football and likes to hit and make tackles," Pearson said. "He's a hard-nosed kid that has a nose for the football. He was a four-year starter for us and he's very intelligent.
"He's going to be a fine college player."
Gresham comes from a small school located roughly 80 miles east of Tallahassee so he shouldn't have a difficult time making the transition. He will, however, be the first player from Lafayette High School to attend Florida State on a football scholarship.
There have been other college-bound players in the past from Gresham's school, but they have wound up at that other place not too far away.
"We have had some good ones go to UF," Pearson said. "Now we have a good one going to FSU."
As a senior this past season, Gresham led his team with 121 tacles, 12 tackles for loss, six sacks and three fumble recoveries. He should have no problem qualifying academically.
