FSU Talks about Nose Guard Paul Griffin
"Coach Andrews and Haggins knew about him back when he played in high school," defensive end Coach Jody Allen said. "Paul dominated at Pensacola High School but he just didn't have the grades. He's got focused and he did real well with his grades in junior colleges."
With the graduation of Broderick Bunkley, the Jayhawk All-Conference standout will be expected to fill big shoes.
"He's physically ready to make an impact right away," Allen said. "We need him at nose guard right away. What I like about him is that his motor never stops and his quickness. He's very explosive."
Defensive line Coach Odell Haggins is very excited about his new lineman.
"He's strong, quick and powerful," Haggins said. "Paul will start out wherever we can get him on the field the quickest."
On his official visit to Florida State, Griffin got the opportunity to watch film of Seminole All-American Broderick Bunkley and he came away very impressed.
"He's very aggressive and I feel I'm a lot like him," Griffin said. "I play well for my size and I have good technique. I'm also pretty fast. Last semester I ran a 4.7/40."
In addition to speed Griffin is a very strong player. He has benched up to 455 pounds to go along with a squat of 650 pounds.
As a true sophomore at Butler, Griffin recorded 56 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss and six and ½ sacks. He also put up some pretty good numbers in high school.
"As a senior at Pensacola high school, I had 125 tackles and 16 sacks," he said. "I was recruited and offered by a lot of schools like Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State."
Griffin has three years of eligibility to play two years on the field.
