Q & A with QB Drew Weatherford
Posted Nov 8, 2005
Seminole quarterback Drew Weatherford met with the media Tuesday afternoon to talk extensively about the loss to N.C. State last weekend. The following is a transcript of that conversation.
Q: Any idea how many times you got hit Saturday?
A: No idea. The offensive line really did a good job considering the circumstances. (The N.C. State defensive line) is really good. I think they only gave up two sacks, which was impressive. Primarily when I got hit was after I threw the ball.
Q: How tough was the weekend for you?
A: It was real tough, to be honest. It was hard to cope with. We had plenty of opportunities. For me to get a chance to come back in the game and not get it done was real disappointing, to say the least.
Q: The play where you tripped on the offensive line, is that part of the learning process for you slowing down and not getting anxious when taking the snap?
A: No because there is nothing I can do about getting stepped on. I do the same thing every time and I think what happened was our right guard got nervous because there was someone in the gap and he kind of stepped over and stepped on my foot. There is no preparation that you can do. If anything, I should have gotten out quicker.
Q: Was it harder for you to get over throwing the interceptions than say, in previous games?
A: I had a hard time of getting back into the flow of the game after sitting for 15 minutes. I don't know?it's tough to get beat up on like that and then have to sit and get sore for about 10 or 15 minutes and then go back in after you are cold. I feel like when I did throw the interception in the endzone, I probably would have run the ball if I feel like I was in the flow of the game because there was definitely room to run the ball.
Q: Can you talk about what was supposed to happen on both of those interception plays at the end of the game?
A: The first one was we had two stop routes on the outside and we had flags by the two inside receivers. They only rushed two and they dropped the (nose guard) looking for like screens to Lorenzo (Booker) over the middle of the field. I just forced it. The corner on the outside just kind of baited me. He acted like he was going to cover the underneath guy and right when I released the ball he just kind of jumped on it. The other one was the same play that Chris ( Davis) scored on earlier. I was just trying to make something happen at that point. I got sacked and we had our backs against the wall. I couldn't really throw it to the outside; they had safeties over the top. I just got greedy I guess.
Q: How was practice Monday after the loss?
A: The whole season, we still have great leadership and we had a good practice last night. Nobody was too down ? I am sure everybody was over the weekend ? but once practice starts you've got to forget about it and everybody is just ready to correct the mistakes they made.
Q: Do you expect teams to start dropping guys to cover the pass since you cannot run the ball?
A: I don't know. I am sure teams are going to start mixing it up, doing a little of both. N.C. State did a good job of disguising whether they were playing man or zone. They would be dropping eight sometimes and then rushing six.
Q: It seems that every week the teams you face are putting in special defensive schemes for you guys. How difficult has that been for you?
A: It hasn't been too bad. It was this past game. It was really hard. That three safety look is something that we had not seen the whole season. I wasn't really sure how to treat it. We didn't know what they did sometimes. The middle safety would run down and play like a linebacker. Sometimes he would run to the strong side or the weak side and I couldn't really decipher if that was a zone package or a man package.
Q: As a friend and teammate of
, do you kind of feel for him struggling so bad?
A: Yeah, that was tough. It's just a tough situation for him to be put in. To go in with us down by 10 and him having to sit there for two hours and not being in the flow of the game and go out there and be expected to save the game was not very fair, I don't think.
Q: How tough has it been not being able to run the football?
A: It's definitely hurt. In every game, it seems like teams are respecting it less and less. The (defensive line) is rushing up the field a lot more aggressively and not anticipating us to run the ball very often. The DB's aren't paying attention to play-action fakes. It seems like they know we are going to pass the ball every time and it has made it difficult. I feel like we are going to have to be able to run the ball to win these next two games. We've got to get something going on the ground.
Q: From your vantage point, how do you feel the offensive line is doing with all of these injuries?
A: I think they are doing really well. I don't know what it is about the run game that's not getting it going but pass blocking-wise they are giving me sufficient time to throw the ball. Against two great (defensive ends) they did a really good job. (David) Overmyer held his own and (Cory) Niblock handled his guy well. I feel like they are doing a good job but there is always room for improvement. Running the ball, I don't know what it is. Is it were not having the mentality because we are not doing it enough? I don't know. It seems like there is always something going wrong; backs making the wrong read or there's a block missed or they are in a blitz when we are running the ball. I don't know, it just always seems like it's not working out.
