On a night where true freshman Drew Weatherford struggled to get anything going, the true freshman…
FSU Sidebar - Weatherford
Hampered by a lack of accuracy and missing injured receiver Willie Reid, Weatherford completed 7-of-24 attempts for 67 yards before he was lifted in favor of Xavier Lee to start the third quarter.
Lee's lone drive was defused by a fumbled snap and Weatherford was back in the lineup to take a knee in the closing minutes.
"Our quarterbacks are freshmen and they played like freshmen tonight," FSU quarterback Bobby Bowden said.
Throwing over, behind and in front of his intended targets, Weatherford stumbled to a 3-for-12 first half with two of those completions coming on screen plays.
Weatherford didn't find a wide receiver until the 6:24 mark in second quarter when he hooked up with De'Cody Fagg for a modest five-yard gain.
Fagg (2 catches, 20 yards) and O'Neal (seven yard gain from Lee) – both freshmen – were the only receivers to find the scoresheet.
"He has small things to correct," tailback Lorenzo Booker said. "He'll get there and get straight. The important thing is that he stayed confident out there."
"Miami is a heck of a team with a heck of a defense," Weatherford said. "I feel fortunate to get out with a win.
"My timing wasn't very good. That was my main problem tonight. But our offensive line did a great job run blocking and pass blocking. I didn't play as well as I should have but I'll improve each week."
Bowden didn't comment on the status of the quarterback job following the game. Regardless of his decision, Lee and Weatherford will be ready for The Citadel in four days.
"It's going to be like that the rest of this season and the rest of our careers," Weatherford said. "It's something that we're going to have to deal with and we're fine with that."
