Davis is Ready for the Starting Role
Posted Mar 17, 2005
Coming out of high school, Chris Davis was touted as the next Peter Warrick. However, a transition from quarterback to receiver and injuries has prevented him from living up to those expectations. The former St. Petersburg Catholic five-star athlete hopes to change all of that this season.
has had an excellent off-season workouts and he’s looking forward to being a starter for the Garnet & Gold this upcoming season.
“Mat drills went real good,” Davis said. “It went better than I expected. This was the first time that I did everything. The first year, I had the knee problem and last year it was an ankle injury. This was the first time that I went through the whole thing. I think I did pretty well. I got two perfect scores.”
How did he benefit from mat drills?
“I got a lot out of it like endurance and quickness,” he said. “The whole thing is about finishing. How long you can go and how fast you can go.”
Davis, who isn’t the biggest player around, hopes to get bigger before the season starts.
“I made some gains in the weight room but I’m not where I want to be at yet,” he said. “Right now I weigh 182 pounds. I’m just going to keep working out.”
Even though Davis is slated as a starter, he will continue to push himself and compete.
“All the receivers compete like me,
,” he said. “Everybody wants to be the best so we push each other. When we our out on the field working out, the quarterbacks are out there as well. They all have great arms and look good.”
Last season as a sophomore, Davis caught 14 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown. As a freshman, he caught 23 passes for 264 yards.
As a senior in high school, he was selected to the First Team USA Today team by totaling over 3,000 all-purpose yards at quarterback.
