Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews is always looking for defensive backs that process the qualities of speed and attitude. The Seminole secondary coach found exactly that in a 5-foot-9 and 178 pound speed-demon from Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep.
The Seminoles landed one of the top athletes in the country in
Michael Ray Garvin
. The four-star standout boasts a 40-yard dash time of 4.4 seconds and a 100-meter time of 10.6 seconds. He also brings outstandouting strength and athletic ability to the table. He bench presses 300, squats 415 and has a vertical jump of 33-inches.
Coach Mickey Andrews is very excited about the newest Seminole cornerback.
“Michael Ray has blazing speed,” Andrews said. “I mean he’s big-time fast. One think you can’t coach is speed and another is ability. He’s got really good hips. I was impressed with him on offense also. He ran for something like 1,600 yards. He’s a tough kid. He might not have the height of
Jamie Robinson
but he certainly has the speed, quickness and catch-up speed that you look for in a corner.”
His father told The Territory that Coach Andrews was impressed with his son’s technique and hard work.
“Mike has been working very hard and he wants to go down there and show everyone what he has,” father Johnnie Ray Garvin said. “Mike is a four-year starter and he doesn’t want to ride the bench down there. He wants to compete with the very best athletes and that’s why he chose
Florida State
. During the recruiting process, Coach Andrews spend a day with us and critiqued Mike on film. He said that Mike does some things that some of his current players don’t do yet.”
Florida State hasn’t done well with recruits from the state of New Jersey but Garvin is hoping to change that.
“People up here say that Florida State doesn’t play players from outside of their region,” Johnnie Ray Garvin said. “Someone had to be a pioneer and prove that they do.”
Garvin finished his senior year with 60 tackles and three interceptions. Offensively he rushed for over 1,600 yards and totaled 34 touchdowns.
