Will Top DE Visit The Noles Over The Summer?

With Florida State losing their two starting defensive ends to graduation at the end of this upcoming season and the fact the Noles didn’t sign a pass rusher in the class of 2004, probably makes it the biggest recruiting need for the Garnet & Gold. There are several prospects that can fill that need but one stands above the rest. Will he camp in Tallahassee over the summer?

It appears that defensive end Averell Spicer of Rancho Cucamonga (CA) is the Seminole coaching staff number one player on their board at defensive end. Because of the huge need at defensive end, he could be the number player on their board regardless of position.

It’s easy to see why so many big-times programs like Florida State and Southern Cal are hot after his services. The 6-foot-2 and 262 pound All-American has been described by many experts to be a freak of nature. In addition to outstanding size, he also has the speed, strength and athletic ability that set him apart from the rest of the pack.

“I run the 100 meter in track,” Spicer said. “This past year I ran an 11.2 which is one of the fastest times for a person my size. I’m the fastest guy on my teams. As a freshman I ran a 10.9 100 meter but I only weighed closer to 200 pounds.”

Spicer has also bench-pressed up to 325 pounds and he squatted an amazing 615 pounds. He also has a vertical jump of 32 inches.

All of his freakish attributes have registered to production on the gridiron. At the Southern Cal lineman camp, he was unblockable. As a junior, the California standout, registered 60 tackles and 14 sacks

What are his plans for the summer?

“The only camp I’ll attend is the Oregon State one,” he said. “However, I’ll visit Florida State unofficially over the summer. My mother is heading to Florida anyway for a visit.”

Spicer told The Insiders.com that the Trojans and Noles are still very high on his list.

“USU has been pretty good lately,” he said. “Coach Carroll told me that they like me a lot. I’ll probably will not visit them officially because they are so close to my home. I’ll definitely visit Florida State officially. Coach (Jody) Allen told me that they didn’t sign a defensive end last year. Because of that I’m giving them consideration.”

He indicated that he will take all five of his officially visits before making a decision. He’s not sure where else he’ll visit yet.

Spicer is an excellent student who is on track to qualify.

He has a total of 15 scholarship offers with the most recent ones coming from Oklahoma and Kansas State.
