Big Inning Propels Seminoles over Bulls

FSU beats USF 4-1, improves to 10-1 on the season.

Florida State used a big first inning to improve to 10-1 on the season with the 4-1 victory against South Florida on Wednesday afternoon. The Seminoles got things going in the first after Justin Gonzalez reached on an error. D.J. Stewart singled putting runners on the corners for John Nogowski. Nogowski brought Gonzalez home with a ground out to third. Brizuela then singled and Stewart scored from second. Jameis Winston followed that up with a double off the right field wall which scored Brizuela. Sansone then singled which allowed Winston to score. At the end of the inning Florida State was up 4-0 which was more than enough to secure their tenth victory of the season.

Kenny Burkhead got the start for Florida State, but only pitched a single inning. He gave up one run on two hits. Bryant Holtmann came in at the start of the 2nd inning and pitched four scoreless innings. He only allowed two hits and one walk. Billy Strode followed Holtmann with two innings and gave up only two hits. Mr. Reliable Gage Smith made his tenth appearance for the Seminoles in the 8th inning and was dominant as usual. Jameis Winston came in for the 9th inning and got the save. Bryant Holtmann gets his second win of the season.

Florida State was able to load the bases a couple of the times throughout the rest of the game, but the South Florida pitching staff did a great job of getting out of the jams. Neither team was able to push a run across after the first inning. DJ Stewart was able to reach base four times which improved his on base percentage to a team high .547. Justin Gonzalez and John Sansone both have an on base percentage over .500 as well.

South Florida falls to 9-4 on the season. Florida State will return home for a series against Maryland this weekend starting on Friday at 4 PM.
