Luke Weaver improved to 2-0 on the season as Florida State defeated Georgia 8-3 in game one of the weekend series in Athens.

No. 4 ranked Florida State defeated Georgia 8-3 on Friday night to improve to 5-0 on the season. Starting pitcher Luke Weaver improved to 2-0 on the season. Georgia falls to 1-4 to start the season and desperately needs a win to get back on track. Georgia got a run in the top of the 4th inning to tie the game, but the damage could have been a lot worse if not for Weaver getting a strikeout with the bases loaded. Head coach Mike Martin was pleased with how Weaver handled the situation.

“[Weaver] made some key pitches to get the last out,” Martin said. “It was big and we really showed what we were all about.”

Florida State made the Bulldogs pay for that in the bottom of the 4th with 6 runs. The Seminole batters were extremely patient at the plate and forced four walks and a HBP before a Florida State player had to swing the bat. Catcher Danny De La Calle added two RBIs on his single and Florida State never looked back. Reliever Billy Strode continued his strong performance from Tuesday with three more strike outs in 1.2 innings pitched. The Seminoles added another run in the 8th on Justin Gonzalez’s double that scored Ben DeLuzio. Gage Smith pitched the last out of the 7th and then finished the game.

The one bright spot today for Georgia was Jess Posey. Jess’ older brothers Buster and Jack both played for Florida State. Posey went 3-4 with a homerun and two RBIs.

“He was really impressive,” Martin said. “There’s a spot in my heart that says nice going, but Luke Weaver would be the so-called recipient so it is hard for me to do anything but tip my cap to him. Posey did a great job.”

Florida State continues to do an excellent job of getting men on base. The Seminoles had 8 hits, 8 walks and a HBP. The latter part of the lineup came through again for Florida State as the 7-8-9 hitters had four of the eight RBIs.

Florida State plays Georgia again tomorrow at 2 PM. Brandon Liebrandt will start on the mound for the Seminoles.
