Luke Weaver dominates from the mound, and Florida State starts the 2014 season with a solid win.

Starting Pitcher Luke Weaver shook off some early rust and turned in a dominating performance in Florida State’s 13-2 victory over Niagara. Weaver issued a four pitch walk to the first batter he faced before settling down and retiring the next 16 hitters before a throwing error by the third baseman Brizuela ended that streak. Weaver was on a 90 pitch limit according to head coach Mike Martin. Weaver got through the sixth inning without giving up a hit. He faced one over the minimum, struck out seven, and threw 89 pitches.

Florida State got things going right off the bat, literally, as Josh Delph started the bottom of the first with a stand up double. He was brought in two batters later by the preseason All-American D.J. Stewart. Stewart had a monster game going 4-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Stewart also had a fantastic catch in left field where he caught the ball just before slamming into the wall. Justin Gonzalez drove in two runs in his return from a season ending injury last year. Jose Brizuela, John Nogowski, and Lee Howard all drove in two runs as well. Freshman sensation Ben Deluzio showed off his jets all game as he beat out an infield single, stole a base, and made an amazing diving catch in center field in his debut.

Florida State got into a little trouble in the seventh inning, but senior reliever Gage Smith got the Seminoles out of trouble. After that it was smooth sailing for the Seminoles as they scored 8 of their 13 runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The Seminoles host Niagara again on Saturday at 2 PM.
