2012 Season Review: CB

The 2012 season is over for the Miami Hurricanes so it's time to take a look back at what happened. Today, we break down the play of the cornerbacks.

The Players:

Brandon McGee (Sr) -- The team's top cornerback from day one this season, McGee finished the season with 54 tackles, two interceptions, and seven pass breakups. He started all 12 games, and will be missed in 2013.

Thomas Finnie (So) -- A starter for the early part of the season, Finnie lost his job to Gunter in the second half of the season. He played in all 12 games and finished with 30 tackles, one interception, and three pass breakups. Finnie was recently arrested for an off-the-field issue, and has been suspended indefinitely.

Ladarius Gunter (So) -- A Junior College transfer who went through spring football, Gunter landed a starting job a few games into the season. He played in every game, had 27 tackles, picked off one pass, and broke up six more.

Tracy Howard (Fr) -- After being rated as one of the nation's top recruits last year, Howard made an immediate impact. He played in all 12 games, recorded 17 tackles, and broke up four passes along the way.

Antonio Crawford (Fr) -- Playing as a backup, Crawford saw playing time in all 12 games and finished the season with seven tackles.

Larry Hope (Fr) -- Redshirted.

Nate Dortch (Fr) -- Redshirted.

2012 Recap: This unit was extremely thin back in the spring. Only McGee, Gunter, and Finnie went through spring football. The arrival of the true freshmen was much needed. McGee was solid. Finnie struggled in a starting role. Gunter showed signs of being good down the road. Howard flashed lots of potential, and Crawford did some nice things off the bench.

Looking ahead to 2013: The loss of McGee will hurt since he was clearly the best player here this season. Gunter and Howard will likely enter 2013 as the projected starters. Finnie's future seems up in the air right now. Early reports are that Dortch is going to be very good one day, so he should play a solid role next season.
