North Carolina (1-0) vs. Florida Atlantic (0-0)
Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Dean E. Smith Center
Sunday, 2:30 p.m.
ESPNU (Mike Corey, Jimmy Dykes)
"It's very difficult for college teams, unless they're the elite teams, to blow a team away that they're supposed to. We're not going there for the paycheck." -- FAU coach Mike Jarvis
"I think it was a good night for us, and I think we learned a lot. Hopefully, we'll be able to do some things tomorrow morning in practice to help us get better, and we need to be better on Sunday." -- UNC coach Roy Williams after his season-opening win on Friday night
Team Overview: After finishing atop the Sun Belt standings in 2010-11, Florida Atlantic took a step back last season, finishing 8th in the conference and with an 11-19 overall record. The Owls lost more than half their scoring from that squad, and two top passers -- who are being replaced by a freshmen duo this season -- and were picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt's 2012-13 preseason poll. Sunday will be FAU's season opener and the Owls played an exhibition last Monday, prevailing against Division II Lynn University, 87-80. The positive development from that contest was the 21 points and 12 rebounds from 7-foot Baylor transfer Dragan Seklja. The negative was only leading a DII school by four points in the final minute of the game.
Leading Scorer: Senior guard Greg Gantt has led the Owls in scoring each of the last three seasons. The 6-2 Gainesville, Fla. native is on pace to become the school's all-time leading scorer before he concludes his career. He was selected to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team.
Veteran At The Helm: Mike Jarvis is in his 24th season as a head coach, having reached the national college basketball stage with his postseason finishes at George Washington (1990-98) and St. John's (1998-2003). Jarvis took over the FAU program in 2008 and by the third season had won the regular season conference title.
Series History: UNC and Florida Atlantic have only played once before - a 105-52 Tar Heel victory at the Smith Center during the 2006-07 season.
