Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher did what he had to do Wednesday, dismissing senior cornerback Greg Reid from the football team. The Valdosta native got himself in trouble too many times and had to go.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher announced Wednesday that cornerback Greg Reid has been dismissed from the football team for a violation of team rules.

Originally a five-star recruit from Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes High School, Reid had been a polarizing player throughout his three-year stint with the Seminoles. While the 5-8, 188-pounder was nothing short of brilliant at times both defensively as a corner and on special teams as a return man, he has never been down-to-down consistent in the secondary -- a lack of height has hurt, of course -- and turned out to be an off-the-field distraction too many times.

Reid was suspended by Fisher for a game this past season for running afoul of team rules. He got himself arrested later in the year for misleading police officers during an investigation revolving around his scooter, and even if those charges appeared to be trumped up and were eventually dropped, it again shined a light on the FSU program for the wrong reasons. Most recently, Reid was pulled over last month near Valdosta for illegal window tint and ultimately charged with driving with a suspended license, a seatbelt violation and possession of marijuana.

While this is a move Fisher had to make in order to maintain order, it's a gutsy one since Reid is a three-year starter and the cornerback depth chart isn't exactly loaded with experience. Beyond his former fellow starter, Xavier Rhodes, the 'Noles have the likes of Keelin Smith and Nick Waisome competing for reps, with Smith coming off a redshirt and Waisome having played sparingly as a freshman.

Fisher and Co. could be hurt even more on special teams, as Reid is a truly gifted return man and was on pace to break the school record Deion Sanders set for career punt-return yards, although Rashad Greene was a first-year phenom in 2011 and incoming freshman Marvin Bracy might be the fastest recruit in the history of the program.
